  1. ALBUM REVIEW : Santigold - Maker Of My Make-Believe

    Written by Grace

It’s been four years since Santigold’s last album came out, not that you would’ve noticed. Since then she’s certainly been busy what with changing her name (her real name is Santi White and her original stage name was too similar to that of a the producer of a science fiction film) and featuring on songs from artists as diverse as Kanye West and David Byrne. Certainly not a dull four years. However 2012 has finally brought her latest release, Master of My Make-Believe to fan’s ears. But, is it any good? Click ‘Read More’ to find out.

  5. NEWS : Mystery Jets unveil plans for fourth album, ‘Radlands’

There seems a popular trend cropping up at the moment, in which bands that made a name for themselves in the 2006 era of music are releasing their third or fourth album, alongside a much more mature sound that suits the vibe that’s around at the moment.

This is no different for Mystery Jets, who have just revealed plans for their fourth album entitled ‘Radlands’ which will be with us 30th April.

Having enjoyed a success with their last album, ‘Seratonin’ [a review of which was one of the first posts for One-Two Magazine], they boys decided to go away to Austin, Texas to record their fourth one as the others have all been recorded in London.

This is exciting news; albums recorded in America always have a different sound to those recorded in Blighty, so it’ll be interesting to see how such a British sound fits into an American studio - especially if the studio was a cute little house on a riverside.

Head to mysteryjets.com to read quite a romantic version of events as to how they recorded the album, and watch the video below for a sneak peak.

  6. LISTEN TO THIS : The Maccabees - Feel To Follow

The Maccabees are one of my long time loves, and I knew their highly anticipated third album, Given To The Wild’, was going to be one of my favourite albums of the year before it had even been released. Boy - was I right.

The album is a lot more mature than the first two, which is to be expected given the radio silence of around 3 years. It’s reminiscent of the second Foals album, where the boys have matured their sound and made it slightly more ethereal, but still knowing exactly what the fans want and will love.

My instant favourite track off the album is ‘Feel To Follow’, with ‘Grew Up At Midnight’ coming a close second. The crescendo of ‘Feel To Follow’ is what makes the track, and it’s no wonder that they’ve decided to make a pretty cool video to go along with it - watch it below.

One-Two Magazine are off to the Brighton date of their upcoming tour in March, where they are set to play a series of shows around England, Ireland and Scotland. We’ll be sure to write a review and let you know how it goes!

  7. LISTEN TO THIS : Jack Peñate - No One Lied

Remember Jack Peñate? He was popular a while back, releasing two good albums and highly enjoyable singles, but then shrunk into the abyss of doing nothing. That all changed this morning when a new video was uploaded to his YouTube channel, entitled ‘No One Lies’.

To say it’s very different to his old work is an understatement. This is a stripped back song, with just him, a guitar and a few of his favourite chords. No drums or fancy effects - just a little bit of reverb to emphasise his brilliant voice. It’s definitely a change that we’re liking, as it’s nice to see he’s matured his sound over the last few years; his last album, Everything Is New, was released in 2009.

We’re hoping that this is the next in line of musicians from that era making a comeback - The Maccabees were first, and now Jack Peñate. Who next?

Listen to ‘No One Lied’ below and let us know what you think.

  8. NEWS : Coachella announce line up for two weekend extravaganza

The new year brings a new festival season, and with being one of the first to set up stages and campsites, Coachella revealed their line up last night. It’s set to take place over two weekends, with the same line up over each.

The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg will all headline, and it will also see the return of At The Drive-In. Popular choices such as Florence, Arctic Monkeys and Bon Iver will all be present at the Californian festival, which is set to be one of the biggest yet.

What do you think of the line-up? We’re pretty sure other festivals are going to have a hard time topping this one.

  9. ONE TO WATCH : Lianne La Havas

Perfect if you like: Laura Marling, Corinne Bailey Rae, Adele, Lucy Rose, Simone White - any female singer/songwriter.

Lianne La Havas is something special. She’s a breath of fresh air to what seems to be an overcrowded market at the moment, and her simple, soulful voice makes her top of the class.

She’s been picked up by Bon Iver to support them on the American leg of their recent tour, is scheduled for a residency at a top London venue and her recent performances on Jools Holland were understated yet possibly one of the best that has been seen in recent months - all sure signs of becoming extremely popular.

Have a watch of the video below for the Jools Holland performance of her latest single, No Room For Doubt.

  10. NEWS : Florence + The Machine release video for ‘No Light, No Light’

Florence Welch is a firm favourite with pretty much everyone these days, isn’t she? It comes as no surprise though, as her latest release, Ceremonials, has become a best seller and held the number one stop for a short while.

Her latest release from the album is No Light, No Light - an ‘anthemic’ tune which will not look out of place being chanted at a festival - and the video is below. We personally like the odd combination of voodoo dolls, Ms Welch parading around at great heights and choir boys. What do you think? Like it or loathe it?
